With clean drinking water being so accessible in our lives, we sometimes forget how important it is for human beings. From the time that you wake up in the morning until before you sleep at night, clean, safe water is one privilege in your life that you never notice. Every time you take a bath, or brush your teeth, your hygiene is secured. Every cup of espresso that you make in the morning to keep you running all day, every bowl of vegetable soup that you eat to make sure that you get the right nutrients, your health is secured. But is it the same for people living in remote areas where clean drinking water is considered a miracle?
The story of people living in far-flung areas who don’t have access to safe drinking water is a narrative that will never get old. Nearly 1 billion people around the world do not have access to clean, potable water and more than 1,600 children die from waterborne diseases every single day. Today, drinking contaminated water causes more deaths than HIV, AIDS and Malaria combined. Luckily, Procter and Gamble found a solution to address and resolve this adversity of the human race – a packet that can save one life every hour.
P&G Purifier of Water is a mini-water treatment plant, a water technology to kill bacteria and viruses in water. Each packet transforms 10 liters of contaminated water into clean, potable water in just 30 minutes. It was invented by a laundry scientist of Procter and Gamble named Philip Souter, who was originally trying to find a means to separate dirt from used laundry water. The treatment process mainly involves 3 processes: coagulation, flocculation and disinfection.
As Philip Souter explained in a Youtube video of Mark Rober, the coagulating agent of the powder works first. It’s mainly positively charged crystals that attract the negatively charged dirt from the water until they are a millimeter in size. After so, the flocculant, which is polymer in nature, is activated. This agent basically holds the dirt together into clumps, as large as centimeter chunks. Finally, the chlorine is released, killing the remaining percentage of bacteria and viruses in the water that did not get wrapped up.
Since 2004, people in over 90 developing countries have used these packets and have saved millions of lives. Having the goal to save one life per hour in the developing world by supplying safe, potable water, P&G collaborated with US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to ensure that not just 1 in 10 people have access to clean drinking water.
It is unquestionable that water will always be a primary necessity for humans, or for every biotic organism on Earth, for that matter. With climate change in the picture, we can truly say that the once potable water in the streams of rivers and lakes have transformed to source of contaminated, deadly water. The non-threatening rainwater in the past is now a shower of literal acid that one can never go under. Having the power to be a difference between life and death, this packet is a big step of humanity towards the safety of everyone.
Human beings have been looking for evidence of life in the outer space so that our race can still survive if the Earth goes extinct. In searching, the first thing to look for is the evidence of water. But why don’t we do the necessary actions today and maintain the sustainability of Earth, instead of finding another planet to corrupt?
